A traineeship is a skills-development programme that is centred around a work experience placement. Our traineeships can last from 6 to 8 weeks and consist of the trainee spending 1 day per week in a virtual classroom and 4 days per week gaining work experience with an employer. Traineeships help 19 to 24 year olds to get ready for an apprenticeship or job if they don’t have the appropriate skills or experience.
Employers who offer work placement opportunities for traineeships for 70 hours or more are eligible to receive an incentive payment of £1,000 per learner, for up to 10 learners per organisation. There is no cost involved for the employer and no wages are required to be paid to the trainee. However, we do encourage employers to offer bursary payments of between £50 - £75 per week for the trainee to assist with food and travel costs.
Once a trainee has completed their placement with an employer, there is no obligation to employ the trainee. However, you may want to consider moving the trainee onto a Kickstart Scheme placement or Apprenticeship to fully utilise the grant funding incentives available.
